OUR TEAM

Walker and Joe graduated from the Culinary Institute of America together in 2002.

After cooking at Alain Ducasse at the Essex House, the two remained comrades and friends, who one day hoped to open their own restaurant in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
Battersby opened its doors to the neighborhood in October 2011.

Walker Stern-Chef, Owner
-Walker started washing dishes in Atlanta at age 14 after school, and fell in love with restaurants immediately.
-After completing his externship at La Folie in San Francisco, Walker went on to work at The Ritz Carlton dining room under chef Sylvain Portay.
-Walker was Chef de Cuisine at The Vanderbilt, and has also cooked at Blue Hill and 81.

Joseph Ogrodnek-Chef, Owner
-Joe grew up in Philadelphia on Battersby Street, and began cooking at neighborhood restaurant in Center City, Opus 251, at age 15.
-Joe was previously the executive chef at Anella, Sous Chef at Gramercy Tavern, and has also cooked at Union Square Cafe and Tabla.

We are named after Battersby Street, in Philadelphia, the street Joe grew up on.
It happens to be the very same street that our master builder of bars, Steve Perillo, has called home for over 30 years.
